New mobile storage products intro'd by Transcend

Although digital photography may have reduced the need for conventional storage mediums like shoeboxes and photo albums, it has upped the demand for magnetic alternatives--alternatives that need not be locked inside a computer. Such alternatives were released this week by Transcend Information, a worldwide maker of storage products headquartered in Taiwan. The new offerings were a rugged external hard drive, the 250GB StoreJet 25 mobile ($176.99), and two spacious USB "thumb" drives, the 32GB JetFlash V60 ($178.99) and the 16GB JetFlash V85 ($104.99).

According to Transcend, the shock-resistant StoreJet 25 mobile hard drive, which will also be sold in a 160GB version, meets U.S. military standards for drop-testing. Measuring 5.3-by-3.2-by-0.8 inches and weighing 7.3 ounces, the unit is both compact and lightweight. It has a USB 2.0 port that supports transfer speeds up to 420 megabits per second and popular operating systems such as Windows 2000 / XP / Vista, Mac OS 9.0 or later, and Linux Kernel 2.4.2 or later. A "one touch" button on the unit supports quick backups when used in conjunction with the software packaged with the drive. If you can live without all that shock protection, though, you might want to check the 350GB SimpleTech mobile drive now selling at BestBuy for $99.

If you're looking for sizable storage in a small package, the JetFlash V60 may suit your needs nicely. It crams 32GB in a  package about the size of a AA battery. It also contains a suite of programs for automatically logging into Web sites, locking down a PC, storing Internet bookmarks, encrypting and compressing files, managing e-mail and backing up data. Because major operating systems like Windows, OS X and Linux support drives like the V60, the drives are handy for moving image files between platforms.

The smaller capacity V85 is Transcend's svelte drive. It's 1.9 inches long, 0.6 inches wide and a very thin 0.2 inches thick. With dimensions like that, it's ideal for getting into tightly stacked USB port arrangements found in some computer systems these days. The unit has the same software as the V60.

All the products can be purchased at Transcend's online store.
